Newspace Center for Photography invites you to enter our 7th Annual Juried Exhibition. Winning images will be shown at the Center during the month of August 2011. The competition is open to all photographic themes and processes, but the work should have been created in the last five years.

EXHIBITION & AWARD

Those accepted into the show will be notified by early July and will be posted on our website. Selected photographers will exhibit at Newspace from Friday, August 5th through Sunday, August 28th, 2011. One photographer will be selected for a solo show at Newspace in 2011 and awarded $500. Regional, national, and international entries are accepted.

ENTRY DETAILS

To enter, fill out and mail a completed entry form. Only CD submissions will be accepted. Images must be 300 dpi jpg files no larger than seven inches in the longest dimension. Each jpg file must be titled with your last name, first initial, “underscore” and the correlating number to match the entry form. For instance, Mike Smith would be SmithM_1.jpg. The CD itself must be labeled with the photographer’s name. Materials will not be returned.

The entry fee is $40 for five images. Newspace TOY CAMERA level (and higher) members may enter five images for FREE. You may enter as many times as you like. Entry fees are non-refundable.

There is no theme for this exhibition. The images will be evaluated as a cohesive body of work, rather than individual images. Fifteen photographers will be chosen to display their twelve-image portfolios in the Center's Portfolio ShowCase Volume 5 book and online exhibition.

Chris Pichler is the founder and publisher of Nazraeli Press. Based in Portland, Oregon, Nazraeli Press publishes books specializing in contemporary photography.

EXHIBITION AND AWARDS:

With selection for this exhibition, featured artist's work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants, and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center's Online Gallery exhibition as well as published in the Portfolio ShowCase Volume 5 Book. Select artists also will receive a blog feature at the Center's blog PERSPECTIVES.

Juror's Selection: The juror will select one portfolio to be the first presented in the book and will select an image from the portfolio to be the book cover.

Solo Exhibition Award: One photographer will be chosen to display their portfolio in the Center's South Gallery.

Each participating artist will receive a complementary book.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

Exhibit Prints: All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed or mounted professionally. The Center recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. Please no colored mats or frames. To encourage participation by photographers from around the world, the Center offers optional economical printing and framing services. Additional details will be provided upon request.

Acceptance Notice: Everyone who submits will receive an email notification of which images were accepted. Accepted images will be posted on the Center's website along with instructions for the gallery presentation.

We announced last month that there will be a general meeting October 10th for all members to attend.

After much discussion we have concluded that the future of Positive Focus rests in the hands of the general membership. We are not a large enough Board to re-establish and run Positive Focus the way it has been run in the past.

We encourage all members to consider their interest in Positive Focus and how much time they feel they can devote to shaping its future. We believe, given all of the positive benefits of working within Positive Focus, that there will be a significant number of members who will want to contribute their time and creative energy to the future of Positive Focus.

When we meet on Wednesday, October 10, we will provide an overview of the past (Lorrie’s vision, past projects, etc.), the present (infrastructure in place to build from), and the immediate challenges to be dealt with over the next few months.

In order to gauge the level of interest in and commitment to the next phase of Positive Focus, we ask that members RSVP to julie@positivefocus.org to let us know if they will be attending the

This Thursday, September 6th, the "Diversity of Devotion" exhibit will have it's inaugural opening reception at the Safe-T Gallery.

This unique and relevant photography exhibit which I was able to initiate and produce (originally with Positive Focus, Inc.) is the culmination of a photography competition which launched in 2006.

Our five wonderful jurors, choose the top work from hundreds of submitted photos, covering 20 unique religions and spiritual practices, which best exemplify the diversity of faith and practice found in New York City.

We are also pleased to present an amazing slide show by one of our top winners, Stephanie Keith - - who documented over ten private Haitian Voodoo Ceremonies in Brooklyn.

The 11th Hour: The "Diversity of Devotion Benefit Concert" is in your hands.....

This is it. One last attempt to offer you the chance to purchase discount tickets to the "Diversity of Devotion" Benefit concert on July 26th, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. We only need a handful of people to purchase a pair of $25 tickets or as singles.....otherwise the Benefit will be CANCELLED.

I realize there are many worthwhile causes to donate to, but this event is entirely created by artists and funded by artists. DOD was an inspired idea which turned into a challenging project and unique photo competition which as never been done before in NYC. All of us who participated have been moved and effected by this project and the special people we encountered along the way. It would be a shame to not be able to share this work with the public and with each other.

The Benefit Jazz concert and slide show will be an enjoyable evening of music, photography, drinks and discussions --but unfortunately it will be cancelled if we do not meet the quota this week, to book the event.

If you participated in the DOD competition, please consider donating by attending this evening of great Jazz music and slide show of DOD submissions. If you did not participate but only registered, come by and see what you missed! Meet other photographers and network!

Photography and Contemporary Tactics

Curatorial Talk: Thursday, June 7 from 6 - 8pm

Curator Meredith Wisner will discuss the contentious relationship between photography and painting, from early modernism to the present day. Wisner will outline the points of interaction between the two mediums as well as the critical arguments that resulted in their division. The current erosion of this line of reasoning will be considered in terms of some contemporary works. Participating artists include Rahul Alexander, Monique Ford, Jade Getz, and René Smith.

Meredith Wisner is currently working as an assistant archivist at Condé Nast Corporation, cataloging a recently acquired collection of fashion illustrations by the artist Carl Erickson. She received her Master’s degree in the History of Art and Design, Theory and Criticism at Pratt Institute. Her Master’s thesis, Michal Rovner and the Painterly Photograph, challenges the notion of the photograph as document, and seeks to expose the critical underpinnings of that idea.

Washington, DC, will be the juror for the 2007 Photo Review Photography
Competition.

The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of
photography, is sponsoring its 23rd annual photography competition with a
difference.

Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a
limited number of people, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries
in its 2007 competition issue. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen

master classes, interviews with world-famous photographers
and special events that will transform the downtown of historic
Charlottesville, Virginia into a "living image."

Premiering June 7 - 9, 2007 the Festival will showcase the work of
many of the world's most celebrated photographers and exciting
new artists, with images ranging from the fields of photojournalism
to fine art. NPR's Alex Chadwick will interview this year's featured
photographers William Allard, Sally Mann and Eugene Richards
on three separate evenings at the Paramount Theater.

Photo Review International Photography Competition

This year's Photo Review International Photography Competition will be juried by Toby Jurovics, Curator of Photography, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington, DC.

The Photo Review's is "a competition with a difference" that enables thousands of people across the country to see the accepted work in our 2007 competition issue. Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country.

An entry fee of $30 for up to three prints or slides, and $5 each for up to two additional prints or slides, entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue.

All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and May 15, 2007.
